Cloth Diaper Styles
Stylin!
There are many styles and brands of diapers to choose from. Trying to figure out what the differences between the types of diapers are and what works best for you and your baby can be a challenge. Especially when you're new to cloth! Sometimes, it's best to try one or two of a couple different kinds that you like and see which work best. It also doesn't hurt to try several brands as their diapers are all a little different.
As for the number of diapers needed, it's going to depend on how often you'll be doing wash and the age of your baby(s). A newborn needs to be changed 10-12 times a day, and if you're going to wash every 2 days, then you'll need at least 22-25 diapers to be safe. For an older baby you probably won't need as many, 12-15 may be good. For multiple children(especially newborn and toddler together), you'll need at least 30-35. You can count how many times you'll be changing each for a couple of days to get a more exact number. I would recommend always having a couple extra just to be sure! Here is information about the most commonly used types to help you in your quest for diapers!

Prefolds- are the most basic diaper. They look like a big rectangle or square and are folded onto baby. They require a Snappy (y-shaped stretchy plastic fastener) or pins for closure. Covers are needed to keep wetness off of clothes (and mommy!). Prefolds can also be used as extra inserts or doublers as well.

Contours-are a shaped or "contoured" prefold. They do not have any elastic in the legs, front, or back, and do not have snaps or velcro for closure. They require a cover and can either be used with pins or a snappy to close, or neither and just a snug fitting cover. At this time we do not offer any contours.

Fitteds- are diapers that also need covers, as the entire diaper itself is absorbent. They usually have a soaker sewn into the center, but can also come with a pocket in the back to be used for extra absorbency. They can also have doublers(a liner on the inside of the diaper) attached to the inside of the diaper, or one that is removable. Or, both. They are made from a variety of materials from Hemp and Bamboo to Cotton and blends of each. We offer fitteds from Happy Heinys, Thirsties, and Little Beetle.

Covers- are the waterproof pieces used over fitteds or prefolds. They fasten with either snaps or Velcro and are made from variety of materials such as wool, fleece, or polyester with waterproof layers. They can come in many different colors and prints. We offer covers made by Happy Heinys, Stacinator, and Thirsties.

All-In-Ones(AIOs)- are just like they sound! They're a fitted diaper that have a waterproof outer layer that either has Velcro or snap closure. So, no need for a cover! The insert, or soaker, is either sewn into the middle part of the diaper, or attaches to the center(and can be removed for easier cleaning and drying) with a snap or Velcro at the front or the back. AIOs that have the soaker sewn in can take a little longer to dry, but there's no hunting for insert and stuffing pockets or attatching the soaker. There are some, though, that come in a "hybrid" version, where the soaker is sewn into the middle but they also have a pocket in the back. This is so inserts can be used for extra absorbency. Velcro and snap closures are available, as well as sized or one size AIOs. They come in an assortment of beautiful colors and prints, so your baby's sure to have the best looking bottom! We have All-In-Ones available from DryBees, Thirsties, Moneky Doodlez, Bottombumpers, and bumGenius!.

Pockets- are for someone who wants an easy transition from disposables to cloth. They are fitted diapers with a waterproof outer layer, and they have a pocket in the back(or front) for an insert. The insert is the actual absorbent part of the diaper. The inside cloth allows wetness to go through to the insert while keeping baby dry, and also catches the solids. With a pocket diaper, you have the ability to use more than one insert if needed for nighttime, heavy wetters, or just as protection if going out and time between diaper changes may be longer. Pocket diapers come in loads of different colors and prints, and they come either sized, or one size. We offer pocket diapers from Happy Heinys, FuzziBunz, and DryBees and one size pockets from Happy Heinys, FuzziBunz, Thirsties, Wahmies, Rocky Mountain Diapers, and bumGenius!.
